Danielle has been an integral part of training and mentoring over forty specialty interns and is keenly aware that education and training surrounding exotics is lacking – lagging behind the need to provide said care. Through this partnership and support, you ensure quality training and expertise with minimal disruption to busy schedules. We are able to bridge the gap for hospitals and clinicians that hope to improve the level of skill and the standard of care provided for exotic species or offer additional guidance if a practice is just introducing exotics services.
Integrated Husbandry & Care Consultations
In the past decade, the US has experienced massive growth in the non-traditional pet industry. According to Pet Keen, nearly 40% of exotic pet owners do not consider their pets as such, and as a result, assume any veterinarian should be able to render care and advice. With our integrated or referral based email consultations, we offer ready access to on-demand, comprehensive, personalized husbandry support for veterinarians and clients for all non-traditional species. We aim to fill the knowledge gap and break the cycle. Over the years I’ve encountered countless heartbroken pet owners and defeated veterinarians, saddened and frustrated by an ailing exotic pet. It became clear that the problem was often a lack of solid, science-based husbandry information and the guidance throughout the process in translating that information into action. The nuances of creating the ideal environment that meets the specific needs of these special species, and promotes a long, physically and psychologically healthy life, requires a level of expertise and experience that is hard to find.
Consultation Options:
- DVM Consultation: In these cases the clinician will be the main point of contact and an in-depth case report will be generated by The Other Pets based on the information provided through the portal request or email. This will be emailed to the veterinarian for them to use internally and disseminate to the client as they see fit. A same-day video or phone consultation option can be made available for more urgent cases to discuss husbandry, differentials, and treatment options at DVM discretion.
- Direct Pet Owner Consultation: In these cases we will reach out to the client directly, via the email address provided through the portal request or email (DVM or other staff CC’d) to initiate the consultation, communicating with the veterinarian separately to be sure that we are on the same page and fully supporting their medical recommendations. This route offers the most relief from the clinical workload – removing the burden of ongoing husbandry discussions and follow-up. Clients have been very receptive and appreciative of this approach as we’ve rolled it out with other practices over the past year and a half. These consults may be done in advance of an appointment or as a follow-up.
Same-Day Video Consult for Veterinarians
*This is a new service requested by our veterinary clients – If you have a patient in-hospital that can’t wait for a lengthy, in-depth husbandry consult, book a same-day video consult so that we can get eyes on your patient with you and make recommendations and propose a list of top differentials directly to you, to better inform your plan, decisions, and discussions with owners.
Venomous Safety Course:
Whether you are in a veterinary practice that sees reptiles and would like to expand your service to include venomous species, in a wildlife rescue or field research position where you’re likely to encounter venomous snakes and would like to hone your skills, or in a wholesale/retail business that includes the sale of “hots”, we’ve got you covered. With over 20 years of blemish-free venomous snake handling in both wild and captive settings, Chris is an invaluable resource for anyone to whom these skills would be a life-saving asset. Our course comes to you and covers hooking, tonging, tubing, and bagging venomous snakes using safe ambassador species whose behaviour and morphology are in-line with their venomous counterparts to give you one on one, hands-on experience. This lab is available to small groups to allow for personalized instruction and guidance and to afford one on one time with each participant to ensure competence with each learned technique.
